The land of shrapnel
If theatre can happen anywhere, why wouldn't it happen where is most needed?
This is the bet of the Company Teatro de los Sótanos: to take to captive audiences (literally in jail), the Ratatataplan genre, a reinvention of the Rataplan or Mexican Baudeville Theatre, but in times of narco-politics in Mexico.
"The land of shrapnel" is a documentary project that follows the adventure of the company in reaching marginal audiences in jails and poor neighborhoods in Mexico City. Through humor and political commentary they aim to reach social awareness and possibly change.
About the Documentary
"The land of shrapnel" will be a feature documentary about the healing power of art in a broken society. The camera will sometimes be a fellow actor, sometimes an inmate behind bars or an everyday citizen in one of the biggest cities in the world, Mexico City.
We believe there is something unique in the relationship between theater and audiences. We believe this journey will take us into the heart of this bond. But moreover we believe that in a country shaken by violence and social injustice, this documentary about a group of artists is most needed.

ABOUT
teatro de los sótanos
We are a self-managed theater company based in Mexico City, headed by actors, whose mission is to produce and to promote original theatrical creations in a contemporary style, where the actor is the main generator of the scenic discourse.
Our company is engaged in scenic experimentation with the technical tools that the actor can develop on each project, diversifying our results in different styles and forms from play to play.
The company is headed by the actors Lizeth Rondero and Felipe Rodríguez, who founded it in 2005 as their graduation project from the Dramatic Literature and Theater College of UNAM. With this project, now fully consolidated as a company, they both graduated with honors.
In five different occasions, the company has obtained a grant from the National Fund for the Arts and Culture (CONACULTA/FONCA) and recently the Bancomer fellowship from the Fund for the Promotion of the Arts of Bancomer Foundation, for the development and production of our theatrical projects.
Our repertoire is conformed by 7 shows that have been presented in the best theaters in Mexico City, as well as in important national and international festivals in Mexico, Bolivia and Argentina.
